How To Choose Your First Dance Song for Your Wedding

Your first dance is one of the most personal, intimate moments on your wedding day. At Cutting Edge Entertainment, we’ve helped hundreds of couples find their perfect first dance song, so we know how personal (and tricky) that choice can be. It is a moment where every eye is on you after you have officially said your ‘I dos’. For a few minutes, it is just you two with all your loved ones witnessing a pivotal moment in your love story unfolding.

So, the big question is, what is the right song?

Make Your First Dance Song Personal

The best first dance songs are personal ones. Maybe it’s the song that was playing the night you met, or perhaps one you danced to on an early date, or maybe you go with a song you both love. It doesn’t have to be a classic ‘wedding song’ (though there’s nothing wrong with that either).

Besides that, there is something magical about walking onto the dance floor to a song where you know all the words.

If it means something to the two of you, then it’s the right choice.

Read the Lyrics!

It’s easy to choose a song because you fall in love with the melody and forget to really listen to the words. Before you commit, it might be worth reading through the full lyrics. A song about heartbreak or betrayal can feel jarring once your guests catch on to what’s being sung, even if it sounds romantic on the surface. That said, if you love a song with complicated lyrics, don’t let that stop you. It might mean something specific to your relationship. It’s ultimately your call to make.

How Long Should Your First Dance Song Be?

There’s no hard rule when it comes to length. This is your dance, so the right choice is one that suits the two of you. A full song can run four minutes or longer, and it is worth considering pacing since your guests are often waiting through speeches, parent dances, the bouquet and garter toss, as well as other special moments you might have planned afterward.

More importantly, think about how you and your new spouse feel about the dance length. If either of you tires easily, are dealing with a recent injury, or just aren’t comfortable with being the center of attention, those are all good reasons to trim a song. On the flip side, if you want to soak in the moment, there is absolutely nothing wrong with playing the song in full.

If you decide to go the route where you want to trim your song, try to leave at least a minute and a half so your photographer has enough time to capture the moment.

If you would like help with trimming your song or even editing in an intricate way, let us know! Editing is a service Cutting Edge Entertainment provides, and we are happy to work with you, so your special dance reflects your vision.

When to Do It

Another common question is about the timing of the first dance. Some couples choose to go straight into it right after their grand entrance, seamlessly continuing their celebration. Others prefer to take a brief moment to relax before beginning the dance portion of the evening. This approach works very well to gradually warm up the dance floor for your guests after your meal service. Both work beautifully.

Ultimately, it comes down to the flow you want for your big day. One thing to remember is that there is no single ‘right’ way to do it. Choose what makes sense for you and your wedding. If you need tips on reception flow, we’ve got you covered! Our full guide to reception flow.

It’s Your Day

At the end of the day, what really matters most is how you feel. Some couples are even skipping the first dance for something that feels more like them, like a first game, first shot, or even just inviting a loved one up to honor them instead of doing a dance. This is your big day. Do what feels right for the two of you!
